Fujifilm Recipe — „Cathedral of the Birch“
It took me a long time to warm to Gregory Crewdson’s images. When I saw his last series, “Cathedral of the Pines”, in a London gallery in its original size, I realized why. Up until this series, his images were too bright, too colorful – in short: too artificial. “Cathedral of the Pines” is quite different. In terms of setting and staging, they still look artificial, but Crewdson now uses rather cool, desaturated colors. The lighting is no longer as intrusive as in his earlier works; it appears more harmonious, seemingly dictated by the scenery as natural. This recipe is an attempt to recreate this color style for GFX, although it must be said that the actual similarity depends very much on the light and the lighting. The softer and more diffuse the light is, the more similar the result will be to Crewdson’s images. However, the intended look also depends on the existing color scheme not being too gaudy. Personally, I usually have better luck with this in an urban setting than in a lush green forest. Nevertheless, the recipe also helps me to avoid using colors that are too playful. The appearance of the same recipe on the XT4/5 is so similar that I wouldn’t make any adjustments to it for the GFX.
